Sophie Turner Files Lawsuit Against Joe Jonas for Child Custody

Sophie Turner Files Lawsuit in International Custody Battle
Sophie Turner, widely known for her role in “Game of Thrones,” has taken legal action against her ex-husband, Joe Jonas, in a contentious child custody battle that spans international borders. The lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of New York, reveals a tumultuous chapter in their ongoing divorce proceedings.
Allegations and Disputes
In the lawsuit filed on Thursday, Sophie Turner asserts that Joe Jonas has refused to return their two daughters to England, a decision she claims was previously agreed upon. The couple shares a 3-year-old daughter, Willa, and a second daughter born in July 2022, whose name remains confidential.

The legal documents obtained by USA TODAY indicate that Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas met on Sunday to discuss their separation. However, Joe Jonas disputes the allegations, citing a Florida court order that, according to his representative, prohibits either parent from relocating the children. USA TODAY has independently reviewed a copy of this court order.
Custody Clash
Sophie Turner maintains that Joe Jonas was supposed to return the children on Wednesday but has allegedly withheld their passports and “refuses to send the children home to England.” Joe Jonas’s representative, Jeff Raymond, counters that Joe and Sophie had a cordial meeting in New York and that the children have been with Sophie since that encounter. He argues that complying with Sophie Turner’s request would violate the Florida Court order.
As the legal battle escalates, Turner’s representatives have been contacted for comment, while Joe Jonas’s position remains firm in upholding the court order.
Legal Proceedings
On September 5, Joe Jonas initiated divorce proceedings against Sophie Turner in Miami-Dade County court, requesting “shared parental responsibilities” and enforcement of their April 2019 prenuptial agreement. However, Sophie Turner claims that she learned of Joe Jonas’s divorce filing through the media, while Joe Jonas’s representative contends that Sophie was aware of his intentions.
The lawsuit reveals a fundamental dispute over the children’s residence. Sophie Turner asserts that the children have been living in England since April 10, 2023, and the couple had previously discussed raising their children and having them attend school in England. According to Turner’s suit, they even entered into contracts for a home in England and had planned for the children to return there after a vacation with Joe Jonas.
The sudden breakdown of their marriage is alleged to have occurred following an “argument” on August 15, preceding Joe Jonas’s divorce filing in early September.
International Legal Complexities
Sophie Turner’s lawsuit invokes The Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction and the International Child Abduction Remedies Act, legal frameworks that address international child custody disputes. She intends to file a case in England, asserting that Joe Jonas’s custody of their children breaches her rights of custody under English law.
Joe Jonas’s representative rebuts these claims, stating that the use of terms like “abduction” is misleading and a misuse of the legal system. They argue that Sophie’s motives are to move the divorce proceedings to the UK and permanently remove the children from the U.S.
As the legal battle unfolds, the custody of their children remains at the heart of this high-profile divorce.
