Dr. Pamela Mason, a nutritionist and co-author of the research, emphasizes the importance of bridging this gap: “Closing the gap between vitamin D intakes and recommendations is imperative to prevent deficiency, maintain bone and muscle health, and prevent nutritional rickets and osteomalacia (bone softening).”
The numbers are concerning:

- 26% of 11–18-year-olds
- 17% of adults aged 19-64 years
- 13% of adults 65+ years

Dr. Nisa Aslam from HSIS explains, “Sun exposure is the cause of sunburn and a risk for skin cancer.” Various factors, such as the season, time of day, cloud cover, air pollution, skin melanin content, and sunscreen, affect UV radiation exposure and Vitamin D synthesis.
Dr. Aslam further adds, “Sunscreen appears to block vitamin D synthesis, but people usually do not apply sufficient amounts of sunscreen or cover all sun-exposed skin.” Achieving the recommended daily intake of 10 mcg of vitamin D solely from food can be challenging.
