WhatsApp has recently announced that it will no longer be functional on certain smartphones in less than a month. This decision will render users unable to send or receive messages as of October 24. However, iPhone owners can breathe easy, as this development primarily concerns some Android devices.
The messaging platform intends to drop support for handsets running Android 4.1, commonly known as Android Jelly Bean. To continue using WhatsApp beyond October 24, you will need a device with Android 5.0 or newer.
It’s important to note that this move will affect a relatively small number of users with older smartphones, possibly including outdated models from manufacturers such as Samsung, Sony, HTC, and LG.
WhatsApp clarified its stance, stating, “Starting October 24, 2023, only Android OS version 5.0 and newer will be supported. Your phone must be able to receive SMS or calls during the verification process. We don’t support setting up new accounts on WiFi-only devices.”
How to Check Your Android Version
If you are uncertain whether your mobile device is affected, you can easily check its Android version. Here’s how:

- Scroll down and look for About phone.
- You will find your Android version number here.
- Any version 5.0 or above is suitable.
